Being alive in the wonderful year of 2026 gives us access to a lot of wonderful things: strawberries, AO3, Heated Rivalry, fresh water (limited: fuck you genAI), yaoi, and blocking Sombr on Instagram.
The thing that differentiates us now is the yaoi ship that you dedicated your life to. The classic yaoi ships used to be Klance, JohnLock, Merthur, and my personal love, Destial.
I was introduced to Supernatural at the young age of 10 (too young in my opinion) and even then I immediately could spot the beauty of Destial. Dean Winchester, a broken man who sacrifices himself for everyone, faithless, taught “shoot first, ask questions later” and Castiel, an angel of the lord, trained to be a part of the mob, “serve your purpose and you will be in heaven.”
A soldier and a weapon falling in love.
It’s been 10 years since I watched my first Supernatural episode {holy shit how are you pushing 20 and still talking about middle-aged white men yaoi), and I’m yet to see a ship that does everything that Destial and the Supernatural fandom did.
To summarize, Destiel:
- Became canon in Spanish
- ‘I love you, Dean’
- ‘Yo a ti, Cas’
- Started the Omegaverse
- Trust me you don’t want to look too into this. I’m not a huge fan of rpf shipping.
- Primary source of news on Tumblr
- Speaking of Tumblr, broke the site on November 5th when Cas finally confessed his love
- Putin resigned because they did not go canon (DEFINITELY TRUE)
- Greatest queerbait of all time
- Greatest ship of all time (ALSO TRUE)
“Something went wrong. You know this. Something always does.”
“Why does that something always have to be you?”
Even break-up scenes. No one does it like them.
That was the thing about Destiel and just Supernatural as a whole excelled in: great character writing and terrible scene writing. The show was filled with just so much shit but through it all the gay love between two white men pushed through and outlasted it.
No ship will ever do what Destiel did and no ship will ever mean what Destial means to me. And Dean Winchester will always have a special place in my heart.
Anyway this is my official nomination of Destiel for the ‘Greatest Ship to Ever Do It’ Award
